Man sentenced to 5 years in prison for attempted rape of child in Manikganj
The Manikganj Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal has sentenced a man named Md. Akbar Hossain to five years in prison and a fine of Tk 20,000 for attempting to rape a fourth-grade child.
Judge MA Hamid of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict on Wednesday (September 3).
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) of the court, Muhammad Machudul Haque, confirmed the matter.
The convicted accused, Akbar Hossain (50), lives in Gobindabari village in Shibaloy upazila of Manikganj.
According to the case file, on the night of February 16, 2016, when the child went to a local house to listen to music, accused Akbar Hossain tricked her into taking her away. Later, he attempted to rape the child in front of the shop. When the child screamed, her mother reached the spot. Sensing her mother’s presence, Akbar Hossain fled.
The next day (February 17, 2016), the child’s father filed a case with Shivaloy Police Station. On May 17 of the same year, the police filed a chargesheet in the court. After a long hearing and recording the statements of 10 witnesses, the court convicted the accused under Section 9(4)/B of the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act, 2000 (Amendment 2020) and handed down this sentence.
